Become a District of Columbia Notary Public
The Office of Notary Commissions and Authentications in the District of Columbia's Office of the Secretary is the one responsible for certifying individuals who are interested to become a notary public.
Prior to completing the application process, you are required to comply with the following qualifications:
- Minimum age of 18 years
- A legal resident or an employee in the District of Columbia
- Able to read and write English
- Should not have any major convictions
- A bond of $2,000
Steps to become a District of Columbia Notary Public:
1. Read the DC Notary Public Handbook.
2. Fill out and complete the application form. If you're near the Office of the Secretary, you can get a copy at 441 4th Street, NW Room 810S, or you can download the notary application form.
3. Secure a copy from your employer a letter of request stating the reason for notary services. If you're self-employed, you can create a request using a letterhead.
4. Pay the $75.00 commission fee via check or money order made payable to "DC Treasurer"
5. Mail all the required documents and payment to:

6. Wait for the Office of Notary Commissions and Authentications to contact you with your orientation schedule.
Term of Office
The commission term for any District of Columbia Notary Public is five (5) years.
