Where to Find a Notary
Before finding a notary, you need to know that a notary charges for a fee, which is a few dollars and is limited by state law. Now that you have that in mind, here are some of the places to call and visit to find a notary:
- Company or Office. If you’re working in an office, there’s a big chance that your company’s administrative assistant is a certified notary public. And if you’ve received a document in an office, try to ask the person who handed the document to you if they have a notary on their staff.
- Bank. If you need to notarize a financial document, you can call or visit your local bank and inquire if they have a notary available. Before going to the bank, make sure that what you are holding is a financial document, if not, the bank will refuse to notarize on the grounds that it is not covered by their insurance.
- Insurance Agency. These agencies deal with many legal documents on a daily basis, so there’s a high probability that a notary is on their list of staff. Try calling your insurance company and ask for a notary.
- Post Office. If you need to mail your documents, you can ask your local post office if they have a notary on the spot.
- Public Library or Court House. If you happen to visit these public places, try asking for a public official in-charge of notary.
- UPS Store. Your local UPS store is one of the easiest places to find a notary in this list. Almost every UPS owner is a notary. You need to call the store first to confirm if they offer notary services; and if they do, make sure to inquire if they are available by the time you go to the store.
Remember, if you don’t have the time to visit these places, you can always find a notary public or mobile notary with FindNotary. Whether you are looking for a notary in Alabama or a notary in Miami or anywhere else in the United States, we have thousands of notaries listed nearby to help.

Lastly, here are some of the things to remember when dealing with a notary:
- The persons involved in the signing of the documents should be present.
- When bringing a proof of identification, make sure that it has your photo and signature.
- You should not sign the documents before going to the notary. The notary must witness the signing of the document.
A notary is someone appointed and commissioned by the Secretary of State to witness an official signing of documents. The notary’s task is to make sure that the one who is signing is in fact the same person whose name appears on the documents. That’s why it’s important to bring any proof of identity before going to a notary.
